Metro: The Last Light (X360) sales are expected to drop to around 25,000 units in its second week on sale. The PlayStation 2 version is expected to drop to around 15,000 units.

Overall hardware and software sales are expected to drop slightly week-on-week.

Other Hot Games – In Order of Release

The Last of Us (PS3) is now the most pre-ordered game in the US. It added 17,003 pre-orders, up from 9,996 last week, for a total of 295,519. The game has risen from 44,000 to 46,000 pre-orders ahead of Uncharted 3 during the same number of weeks before release. The game is four weeks away from launch in the USA, June 14, 2013.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) added 19,084 pre-orders, down from 11,441 last week, for a total of 221,927. The game is four weeks away from launch in the USA, June 9, 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V (X360) added 4,968 pre-orders, down from 5,970 last week, for a total of 287,296. The PlayStation 3 version added 4,457 up from 3,659 pre-orders for a total of 246,477. The game is 18 weeks away from launch in the USA, September 17, 2013.

Battlefield 4 (X360) added 5,882 pre-orders, down from 8,069 last week, for a total of 138,086. Battlefield 4 (PS3) added 3,309 pre-orders, down from 5,814 last week, for a total of 53,177. The game will be released on October 29, 2013.

Notable mentions: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (PS3) added 18,144 pre-orders for a total of 50,930. Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) added 24,986 pre-orders for a total of 50,493. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) added 18,251 pre-orders for a total of 37,554.

Requests: Watch Dogs (X360) added 1,077 pre-orders for a total of 11,190. Saints Row IV (X360) added 1,472 pre-orders for a total of 9,900. Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) entered the charts this week with just 243 pre-orders.

Virtual Item Sales

In-app purchases and virtual item sales represent one key way to generate money from an app. Users purchase either functional or decorative items to enhance the app. Thanks to the expansion of seamless payment systems, players of free-to-play games are making an increasing number of in-app purchases without the need to open a separate account. Though difficult to gauge, revenues from virtual sales may account for as much as $1.5 to $2 billion annually.

In 2012, microtransactions and virtual goods accounted for 55% of revenue generated by mobile gaming apps. Nanigan has projected that share to increase in 2013 and 2014, then plateau at about 62% to 63%.

In line with these projections, many game developers are embracing a mobile audience, moving to create more Android, iPhone, and iPad games. In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Big Fish Games CEO Paul Thelen said, “We are all about mobile and I think that’s where the market’s going. Juniper [Networks] said it’s going to be 100 billion dollars by 2017 on mobile alone. We are leading with mobile.”

Advertising

Advertising is a rapidly growing source of mobile game revenue. Nanigan projections advertising-supported revenue in mobile gaming spiking from a 2012 rate of 6% to a 2015 rate of 15%. According to Playhaven, the key is maximizing revenue without sacrificing player retention. Interestingly they found that advertising game apps of a similar genre does not present a significant risk to one’s user base. Also, they found that allowing users to engage with a game before showing them an ad, they say, significantly increases the likelihood of retaining those users MobileAdNeworks.net suggests using more than simply banner ads within a game app to generate interest in other products. For example, adding an offer to an app can boost interest and revenue. They also suggest careful tracking of which ads generate the most clicks to help creators select the most profitable ad placements.

The future of the advertising-driven revenue models seems bright. According to ZDNet:

“A recent study by Cambridge University computer scientists found that 73% of apps in the Android marketplace were free, and of those, 80% relied on advertising as their main business model. Free apps are also far more popular in terms of downloads, the researchers said. Just 20% of paid apps are downloaded more than 100 times and only 0.2% of paid apps are downloaded more than 10,000 times. On the flipside, 20% of free apps get 10,000 or more downloads.”

Subscriptions

Subscriptions, though often considered labor-intensive to manage, are another key method of generating revenue in mobile gaming apps. A recent survey showed that the subscription model was used by only 12% of the developers who responded, and generated average monthly revenues of $3683.

The trends above suggest that a combination of advertising-based and in-app purchase (or virtual currency) models will yield the greatest revenue to gaming app creators over the next 2 to 3 years.

Into that breach steps the draenei guild Kharanei of Wyrmrest Accord (US), working to preserve existing draenei heritage while pushing the culture forward into Azerothian society.

“We’re establishing guild canon lore and culture all the time, everything from weddings to holidays to folk tales and language,” says Nelua, Kharanei’s GM. “We actually invented a week-long holiday to coincide with the Indian Diwali, the Festival of Light (much like Blizzard bases its holidays on existing ones). It commemorates the flight from Argus and the triumph of good over evil while paying respects to those who died fighting the good fight. A large, open-attendance celebration was held in Telaar, and it was very successful — a very proud moment for the guild.”

Kharanei brings more than merely entertaining ideas to the table. A lore-driven council with other Alliance guilds and a storyteller-guided roleplaying framework keep its day-to-day progress feeling fresh and alive, pulling the draenei into an ever-closer relationship with the world they now inhabit.

New software sales decreased 3.8 percent to $703.2 million, from $731.1 million a year ago. New hardware sales decreased by a massive 30.6 percent to $241.8 million, from $348.6 million. Pre-owned sales decreased to $572.6 million, from $619.0 million. Mobile sales have grown by 290 percent year-on-year, while digital receipts grew 47.3 percent.
